hand woven sash
mercerised cotton, viscose, wool
When the Commonwealth Games came to Melbourne I wove this sash for an exhibition that meddled with the idea of medals. I thought about all the alternative things we could honor in people and express gratitude for (beyond being the fastest, strongest etc).
I chose compassion first as it is so obviously in short supply at the moment - especially in Australia in relation to our shameful treatment of refugees. I felt a quality so rare, valuable and essential needed honoring at an international gathering purporting to value fair play.
Commissioned for the exhibition ‘Medalling: Eight designers on a quest’ as part of the Cultural Festival Program, Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games.
