At the Billabong

Merri Creek Wetlands
2012

For some time now I have been making work in honour of the Merri Creek billabong and it’s delicate presence.
When properly attended to it is a place at least as wonderful as any far-flung locale I've visited.
These works grow from a wider sense of our bodies and selves being intimately connected with the rest of the natural world, all the time.

Well

2013

dry grass, hand spun thread
approx. 44 x 15 x 15cm

During a difficult time I dreamt of an underground well directly beneath my feet. It extended out and down; a resonant chamber which held all the sustenance I needed. This piece is made in celebration of being well. It also illustrates the delicate relationship between self and wider world, where our health and that of country are inseparable.

Billabong Lines (detail)

2012

dry grass and thread drawings
each approx. 17 x 10 cm
ongoing series
installed dimensions variable

I lie in the grass and the billabong always brings me into the ‘now’. Time and place feel more like one and the same thing here.

Billabong Palette

In the spring of 2012
I collected plant material for dyeing from the Merri Creek billabong and surrounds, plus gleanings from my kitchen downstream.
Dye trials on hemp, mostly with weeds, yeilded a surprisingly beautiful palette.

Dye Plants include:

Black Nightshade berries + foliage
Golden Wattle foliage
Gorse flowers + prickles
Lightwood (acacia) bark
Oak leaves + acorns
Oxalis (sour grass) flowers
Periwinkle flowers + foliage
Prunus Plum foliage
Red gum leaves
Willow bark
Avocado seeds
Brown onion skins
Passionfruit skins
